Your dad’s Vienna Sausage gambit is spot on. Breaking out some kind of unusual snack can easily add an hour to their day. For my kids it’s beef jerky. My youngest son also likes making forts in the boat using beach towels, lifejackets and whatever else he can find. Almost always, one kid wants to stop fishing before the other. Distractions like forts and salty meat snacks help keep the peace!

Great post. The only thing I would add is to make sure to quit when the kids are ready to quit. Don’t make them stay out any longer than they want to or fishing will be a chore to them.

I’ll be taking a rookie dad and his son out fishing this summer, so all of these tips are great reminders for when we go out.

Hi Bassnman! I wanted to share some information with you which I think you might find interesting. I am an award winning co-author of a children’s book we released this year that introduces and educates kids about fishing. “Bur Bur’s Fishing Adventure.” (ages 2-7) In this story, Bur Bur goes on his first fishing trip with his dad and catches his first fish. Kids often develop passion for fishing when they are exposed to it at a young age.

The back of the book has some interactive point-and-learn activities where children can learn more about what to bring if you want to go fishing hiking.
